About momentum leaders

Momentum leaders are companies whose share prices have shown sustained positive movement over several shorter and longer periods. Momentum investors study this pattern because persistent demand can reflect changing earnings expectations, strong industry trends, or improving investor sentiment. This collection provides a structured way to research stocks with recent price strength while keeping the focus on analysis rather than assuming that a rising share price is a complete investment thesis.

What the momentum stock screener looks for

The screen requires market capitalisation of at least $500 million, a one-month return of at least 5%, a three-month return of at least 10%, a six-month return of at least 15%, and a one-year return of at least 20%. Results are sorted by six-month return. Requiring positive performance across multiple horizons favours sustained momentum rather than a single day or isolated short-term move.

How to investigate momentum results

Research what is supporting the price trend. Look for changes in revenue, earnings, guidance, margins, analyst expectations, or industry conditions. Compare the company’s valuation with its growth and with similar businesses, and review trading volume and liquidity. Momentum can be more informative when it is supported by improving fundamentals, but price strength can also be driven by news, positioning, or a temporary supply imbalance. Understanding the catalyst and its likely duration is central to further research.

Managing the limits of momentum screens

Price trends can reverse quickly when expectations change or market leadership rotates. A stock that qualifies after a large rise may have a different risk profile from one early in a developing trend. The screen does not assess valuation, balance-sheet quality, or the probability of a pullback. Results update continuously with market prices and may change materially between reviews. Use this momentum leaders screener to organise market research, then evaluate volatility, liquidity, business fundamentals, and downside scenarios before making any decision.

Define the momentum thesis

Further research should identify the catalyst that might sustain demand for the shares. This could be improving estimates, a product cycle, industry consolidation, or a change in investor expectations. Consider what would invalidate that thesis and how quickly the price could respond. Review volatility, liquidity, valuation, and the gap between the current price and the company’s operating results. A disciplined process separates a trend supported by new information from a crowded move that may be vulnerable to an abrupt reversal. Monitor the thesis as new price and financial data arrive rather than relying on the original entry signal.
